How to set a minimum order value for delivery, pickup, or shipping?

Minimum order validation requires customers to meet your spend threshold before checkout. This feature reduces delivery costs and improves order economics. You can configure minimum order values for delivery, pickup, or shipping independently.

Set Minimum Order Value

The configuration process differs slightly depending on whether you're setting up shipping or delivery/pickup methods.

For Delivery or Pickup

  1. Navigate to Bird App Settings
  2. Select Pickup & Delivery / Configure Locations
  3. Choose your target location (if you have multiple locations)

  2. Click Edit Settings

Delivery method selection screen with Edit Settings buttons

  1. Locate the Minimum Order Value field
  2. Enter your required minimum amount (in your store's base currency, decimals allowed)
  3. Save your settings

For Shipping

  1. Navigate to Bird App Settings
  2. Select Shipping
  3. Locate the Minimum Order Value field
  4. Enter your required minimum amount (in your store's base currency, decimals allowed)
  5. Save your settings

Configuration complete. Your minimum order value is now active for shipping.

Important Configuration Notes

Configure each fulfillment method independently. You can set minimum order values for:

  • Local delivery
  • Store pickup
  • Shipping

Customers see a validation message on the cart page when their order total is below your minimum threshold. They cannot proceed to checkout until they meet your minimum order requirement.

How Discount Codes Affect Minimum Order Validation

Minimum order validation checks the cart total. How discount codes affect validation depends on where the discount is applied.

Discounts Applied on the Cart Page

If a discount code is applied directly on the cart page:

  • The cart total is reduced immediately
  • Validation checks the discounted cart total against your minimum order value
  • If the discounted total falls below your minimum threshold, customers cannot proceed to checkout
  • The validation message appears, requiring customers to add more items to meet the minimum

Example: Your minimum is USD 45. A customer applies a discount code on the cart page. Their total reduces from USD 50 to USD 30. Validation fails because USD 30 is less than USD 45.

Discounts Applied at Checkout

If a discount code is applied later at checkout (after the cart page):

  • The customer has already passed validation on the cart page
  • The discount is applied after validation, so it does not affect minimum order validation
  • Customers may proceed with checkout even if the final order total becomes $0 or falls below your minimum

Example: Your minimum is USD 45. A customer's cart is USD 50, so they pass validation. They apply a discount code at checkout that reduces the total to USD 0. They may still complete the order.

You can set up automatic discounts for delivery methods that apply at checkout. This works well with minimum order validation since checkout discounts do not affect validation.
