Fallback Rates

Updated October 3, 2026

Fallback rates give customers a delivery or shipping rate at checkout when their cart has no Bird pickup, delivery, or shipping selection. Without them, those customers see no rates and can’t check out.

Bird normally shows checkout rates based on what the customer chose in the Bird widget. Some orders reach checkout without a widget choice. When that happens, Bird uses the method you set as your fallback.

When You Need Fallback Rates

Keep fallback rates turned on if any of these apply to your store:

  • You sell through a third-party sales channel such as Facebook, Pinterest, or the Shop app
  • You’ve hidden the Bird widget for some products
ℹ️

Fallback rates are turned on by default, using your local delivery rates.

How Fallback Rates Work

When a cart reaches checkout with no Bird selection, Bird shows the rates of your fallback method as if the customer had chosen it:

  • Each rate’s conditions still apply, such as order price or weight.
  • Rates that depend on a date, day, or time slot can’t qualify, because the customer didn’t pick one.
  • If your fallback method runs through Shopify’s rates, Shopify’s rates for that method are shown instead.

Store pickup can’t be a fallback method.

Set Up Fallback Rates

  1. In the Bird app, go to Rates
  2. Scroll to Fallback rates
  3. If it says Fallback rates are Disabled, click Enable
  4. Under Select your preferred fallback checkout rates, choose Local delivery or Shipping
  5. If you chose local delivery and set different delivery rates for each location, pick the location whose rates to use

Your changes save straight away.

ℹ️

The Fallback rates section appears once you’ve finished the Rates setup guide.

“Products with Hidden Widget” Warning

If you’ve hidden the widget for some products and your fallback method has no rates, the Rates page shows a Products with hidden widget warning. Customers buying those products wouldn’t see any rate at checkout.

To clear it, turn on fallback rates and make sure your fallback method has at least one rate, or click View settings to review which products hide the widget.

Using Bird Rates with CCS

With Bird Rates with CCS as your rates engine, the fallback location in step 5 isn’t used. Delivery rates from any of your locations can qualify. See Bird Rates vs CCS Rates.
